As I welcome 2024 with open arms, I’m taking some time to thoughtfully reflect on the past year and intentionally set my sights on the 12 months ahead. As a busy working mom of two amazing kids, it’s so important for me to have clarity, direction and purpose going into each new year. That’s why I make a vision board every January - it helps me visualize my dreams and intentions so I can map out the steps to make them happen!

In this blog post, I’ll walk you through my easy process for making a vision board that works. I’ll share where I find inspiration, the supplies you need, tips for narrowing down your focus, and how to make this a meaningful activity for your whole family. I’ll also open up about some of my personal and professional goals for 2024 as a bit of inspiration! Whether you’re a passionate planner like me or have never made a vision board before, my hope is that you’ll feel equipped to create one that serves you.

Let’s do this!

Finding Inspiration

Before setting out to gather supplies and images, I first take some time to search my heart and reflect on the past year as well as my intentions for the one ahead. I fine tune my vision by asking myself questions like:

  • What were my biggest accomplishments and joys in 2023? What do I hope to carry forward or expand on?
  • What were my biggest challenges or losses last year? How can I tangibly set myself up for healing or progress?
  • What experiences do I hope to have with my family in 2024? How can I foster more connection?
  • What are my dreams and goals professionally? What steps can I take to inch closer toward them?
  • What does my ideal daily life look like regarding self-care, health and organization? How can I build better habits?

I often journal to these prompts so I can flesh out my vision before determining what should go on my board. I also talk it over with my husband to make sure we’re on the same page for things like family trips we want to save for or ways I can pursue my business ideas while keeping work-life balance intact.

Once I feel clarity around my biggest hopes, dreams and intentions, that naturally gives shape to the categories or focal points I want my vision board to reflect. I’m then ready to gather images and materials that help me visualize what I’m aiming for!

Gathering Supplies

My favourite way to make a vision board is with a large poster board as the base. I like having plenty of space to get creative. I also love the look of corkboards, so I secure one side of my poster board to a corkboard backing using strong velcro strips - this allows me to easily pin and move elements around as my board comes together.

Here’s my full supply list:

  • Poster board or cardboard base (I love the large white foam boards)
  • Corkboard
  • Velcro strips
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Magazines, catalogs or printouts for image clipping
  • Pens & markers for headers/writing
  • Printed photos from year to capture memories
  • Inspirational quotes and affirmations

I save magazines and catalogs throughout the year just for my vision board. Travel mags are great for trip inspo and women’s/home magazines are full of family, fashion and decor ideas I can cut out. I also print out specific images I search online if needed. Using only pictures and minimal text helps everything pop.

If I’m making a board with my kids, I make sure to have kid-friendly magazines on hand and other fun embellishments like coloured paper, glitter, markers and stickers. We turn up the tunes and make an artsy morning of it!

Narrowing Your Focus

With so many hopes and dreams swimming around in your head, it can be tempting to make your vision board a cluttered collage of every single one. Resist that urge! I limit my board to 5-7 key intention areas so each section has breathing room. This helps me narrow my focus and identify the most important goals I’ll review daily.

As an example, the main sections on my 2024 board will be:

  • Travel & Adventure
  • Family & Home
  • Health & Wellness
  • Personal Growth
  • Business Dreams

I’ll use these category headers both visually on my board and practically when I’m combing through magazines for related images. This keeps my clipping and gluing focused! I can always make another small board later on if I have other goals surface mid-year.

Bringing it to Life

Now for the fun part - let your creativity run wild! I start by using colored paper or markers to letter out each intention category in a way that visually pops, then cluster images and elements around it. Think of it like a mood board that makes your dreams feel tangible. The images should spark joy and possibility as you imagine achieving what they represent.

For my “Travel & Adventure” section, I clipped out pictures of the three trips I hope to take this year with my family. I add photos from our last adventures, map graphics, and phrases like “make each day an adventure” to set the tone. For my “Health & Wellness” focus, I have inspirational fitness images but also things that represent self-care like face masks, bath bombs and beach sunsets.

I use plenty of colour, vary the sizes and rotation of images, and make sure to leave some negative space around each focal area so it feels clean and balanced. once I fill my board visually, I go back to add in printed photos from the past year, inspiring quotes, and other personal touches using dimensional embellishments, washi tape and pens.

Make it a Family Activity

Once my personal board is complete, I gather the kids to make our own family vision board! We go through a similar reflective process talking about their favourite memories, places they want to visit someday, what they they want to accomplish this year. My daughter clipped out pictures of Paris since that’s her dream trip, while my son is into martial arts so he cut out images related to that. They each create a mini vision board that we display together in our home.

It’s so fun to watch their eyes light up dreaming about the year ahead! We talk about places we’ll go as a family, projects we want to do together like baking days, and ways we can practice kindness. Making it relational helps us feel unified and excited heading into the new year.

Putting it on Display

They say out of sight, out of mind. Having my vision board in a visible spot is key! I lean mine against my desk in my home office where I work each day. I also display the family board in our kitchen near our command center. This keeps our dreams and goals top of mind as we move through the coming year!

You may also turn your board into locker decor, hang it in your closet for daily motivation while getting dressed, prop it on your nightstand or place it somewhere else you look at often. Get creative with your display so you fully benefit from glancing at it frequently.

Setting Reminders in Your Calendar

While I love having an inspiring visual to look at daily, I take my vision board one step further by tracking related tasks and reminders in my calendar. Turning my dreams into actionable steps is key to seeing them actually happen!

Under my “Travel & Adventure” goals, I add calendar appointments like:

  • January 25th: Book flights for spring break trip
  • February 1st: Research summer vacation rentals
  • February 15th: Set monthly savings goal for family trips

For my “Business Dreams” section, I bookmark reminders like:

  • April 1st: Outline e-course content
  • April 15th: Launch business Facebook community
  • May 1st: Open separate business bank account

You get the idea! Having visible reminders come up throughout the year keeps me accountable. It helps translate the exciting visuals into reality.
